Feds Launch Second Fish Rescue Effort In Delta

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Federal officials are launching a second fish rescue effort on Prospect Island in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to remove fish still trapped by a levee.

Floods breached the island's levees last year and thousands of fish swam into the tract. While the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation rescued carp, catfish and bluegill, thousands of other fish died.

Now it turns out many more survived in the shallow water that was left behind.

The bureau will try to save the rest before the water gets too shallow for the fish to survive. Starting Monday, a team will use equipment to stun the fish and load them into containers so they can be moved back to the river.
