Politicians, activists and musicians are expected to pay tribute to the late lesbian rights activist Del Martin on Wednesday during a memorial celebration at San Francisco City Hall.
Martin died on Aug. 27 at the age of 87. She and her partner of 55 years, Phyllis Lyon, were one of the first same-sex couples in California to get married on June 16, the day the state Supreme Court decision that made their lifelong union legal took effect.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, former U.S. ambassador James Hormel and singer Holly Near are among those scheduled to honor Martin's memory.
During the mid-1950s, Lyon and Martin co-founded the Daughters of Bilitis, the nation's first outspoken advocacy group for lesbians.
