A tribute is scheduled Wednesday in the rotunda of San Francisco City Hall to the life of lesbian rights activist Del Martin, who died in August at age 87.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom are scheduled to attend the tribute for the woman who co-founded the first lesbian rights organization in 1955 with her wife Phyllis Lyon.
The two were the first same-sex couple to wed in California in 2004. They subsequently became the plaintiffs in a California marriage case that legalized same-sex marriage under the state Constitution this year.
The 2 p.m. celebration is open to the public and will include performances by many ensembles, such as Sistah Boom and the Glide Ensemble.
