DA Wants Further Inquiry In De Anza Rape Case

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / BCN) ― Santa Clara County prosecutors have requested further investigation in connection with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl during a March party involving De Anza College baseball players.

"We prefer to have as a complete an investigation as possible, rather than taking a look at the case piecemeal," said Santa Clara County DA Dolores Carr.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's investigators presented the case to the district attorney's office almost three weeks ago but on Tuesday they were asked to resume their work, according to Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Wise.

"They're just following up on a couple of things at the request of the district attorney," Wise said. "It's nothing out of the ordinary."

Part of the follow-up investigation involves DNA evidence. Wise admitted that detectives are awaiting lab results involving DNA.

"We're waiting for one or two final DNA tests," Carr said.

The follow-up investigation should be completed by the "middle of next week," according to Wise.

The alleged rape of the 17-year-old took place in the early morning hours of March 4 during a house party on south Buena Vista Avenue in unincorporated San Jose. Eight De Anza baseball players were suspended from the team following the party.

Neither the District Attorney nor the Sheriff answered questions regarding a second woman who came forward on Monday claiming she was sexually assaulted at the same home last December.

No charges have been filed in the case.
