De Anza Baseball Team To Resume Season
Tuesday's Game First Since Rape Allegations
CUPERTINO (BCN) ―
The De Anza College baseball team will resume its season Tuesday following accusations of sexual assault involving members of the team that surfaced following a party held March 3.
The team will play Tuesday without eight players suspended due to the violation of team and athlete conduct policies related to the investigation, De Anza College spokeswoman Marisa Spatafore said.
The three games canceled since the incident was reported Mar. 4 "will most likely be forfeited," Spatafore said.
Current athletes and incoming student athletes will be subject to additional training and counseling in regards to expected behavior on and off the field, Spatafore said.
The alleged incident occurred during a party held Saturday, March 3 at a home on South Buena Vista Avenue near West San Carlos Street. The alleged sexual assault took place sometime in the early morning on March 4, Wise said.
"There were about 50 people at the party, both men and women," he said last week. "Some members of the baseball team were there as well as both De Anza students and non-students."
While the victim's age has not been released, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Wise confirmed the girl is a minor and not a De Anza student.
The girl was transported to a local hospital sometime after the alleged rape and the alleged crime was reported by the hospital, Wise said.
"De Anza has been very cooperative as well as many of the witnesses," Wise said about the investigation last week.
De Anza College is scheduled to play Cabrillo College in Aptos at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
