Arrest Made In January Slaying Of Danville Teen
OAKLAND (CBS 5 / BCN) ―
A 19-year-old Berkeley man was arraigned Thursday on charges of murder and robbery in connection with the January shooting of a 17-year-old Danville boy on his front porch, but did not enter a plea.
Walter Bell was charged Thursday with murder and second-degree robbery with enhancements for the use of a gun and committing a murder in the course of a robbery. He is being held without bail in county jail.
He did not have an attorney when he was arraigned in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez Thursday afternoon and was referred to the public defender's office for representation.
Contra Costa County sheriff's detectives arrested Bell Wednesday afternoon as he was being released from Santa Rita jail in Dublin on unrelated charges, police and prosecutors said.
A 16-year-old boy was also taken into custody Thursday afternoon and questioned for his involvement in this case. He was later booked into juvenile hall on an unrelated outstanding warrant, Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
The shooting happened around 9:15 p.m. Jan. 20 on the front porch of the victim's house in the 1000 block of El Capitan Drive, police said.
According to prosecutor Harold Jewett, the victim, Rylan Fuchs, had agreed to meet Bell the night of the shooting to sell him a "fairly sizable amount of marijuana."
But when Bell approached Fuchs, Jewett said, he was allegedly holding a gun and attempted to scare Fuchs into giving up the marijuana without payment.
"According to Bell, the gun accidentally discharged and he and his cohorts ran away," Jewett said.
Fuchs, a senior at San Ramon Valley High School, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he died early the next morning, police said.
Jewett said he couldn't discuss how many people are believed to have been with Bell during the alleged robbery and shooting because the investigation is ongoing.
