Elderly San Mateo Couple Dies In Crash In Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (AP) ― An elderly couple from San Mateo were killed in an accident during a snowstorm Friday on Highway 89 along Lake Tahoe's west shore.

An 83-year-old male driver and his 81-year-old wife died when their van crossed the center line and struck an oncoming pickup truck near Sugar Pine State Park, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Their names were withheld pending notification of family members.

"It doesn't appear that alcohol was a factor. It appears they were maybe going too quick for the road conditions, the snow and slush," CHP spokesman Jeff Gartner said.

The 45-year-old truck driver from Carson City escaped injury, Gartner said.
