Concord Apartment Complex Fire Causes $1.8M Damage

CONCORD (CBS 5 / BCN) ― A fire that burned an apartment complex for adults over age 55 in Concord Sunday night caused an estimated $1.8 million in damage and displaced up to 20 residents, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

Fire Battalion Chief Dave George said the three-alarm blaze started at the Chateau on Broadway apartments at 1700 Broadway St. just before 9 p.m. The apartment complex is for residents who are over the age of 55.

About 20 fire units and 60 firefighters controlled the blaze about 9:30 p.m., George said.

An estimated 59 of the 152 apartments were affected by smoke or water damage, George said. Fire officials estimated the damage to the structure and its contents at $1.8 million.

George estimated that 120 people were initially evacuated, and between 15 and 20 residents were displaced and aided by the American Red Cross.

Four residents were transported to local hospitals to be treated for minor smoke inhalation, he said.

Investigators remained on scene early Monday morning to determine what caused the fire, George said.
