So. Bay Leaders Praise Cesar Chavez At Breakfast
SAN JOSE (BCN) ―
More than 350 people, including a who's who of Santa Clara County elected officials, attended Friday morning's breakfast honoring Cesar Chavez at San Jose's Mexican Heritage Plaza.
San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed told the crowd that Chavez's lifelong dedication to serving the farm workers and the Hispanic community is an example that still resonates today.
"The way he lived his life and the concept of service to others is a message to all of us," Reed said
Chavez died in 1993 and while his birthday is now a state holiday, events like the breakfast, now in its sixth year, are important because they allow the lessons of Chavez's life to be re-emphasized to a new generation that does not remember the labor leader, according to San Jose City Councilwoman Nora Campos.
"Our responsibility is to share Cesar's life and work with future generations so they may also lead a life of service," Campos said.
In addition to Reed and Campos, Santa Clara County District Attorney Dolores Carr, supervisors Blanca Alvarado and Pete McHugh and several other South Bay city council members and other elected officials attended the breakfast.
