Census To Employ Thousands Of Bay Area Workers

For information on how to apply to be a census worker, call toll-free: 1-866-861-2010

(CBS 5 / KCBS) As depressing as jobless figures have been, there are employers hiring, and one of the biggest is here in the Bay Area.

The East Bay regional census office in downtown Oakland is still so new that there's plastic on the carpet in the hallway, and a paper sign on the door, but that's not stopping people from calling about jobs. There are 400 or so in that office alone, paying $22 per hour if you're an address-lister, but there are manager, supervisor, and clerical jobs too.

Some of the jobs last eight weeks, others longer. They're available at four other offices as well, in San Jose, San Francisco, Santa Rosa and Stockton.

"The census position takes someone who is perseverant. Someone who can do a lot of walking, for the lister positions, they'll need to know how to use a handheld computer. They'll need basic skills like being able to follow directions," said Leah Bolden, who is coordinating recruitment.

Manager candidates have to take a one-hour written test, and all others a 28-question half-hour test, and everyone has to pass a background test.

Smaller satellite offices will open next year, with recruitment for those positions expected in August.

For more information on the census, visit the website, or call their toll-free job hotline at 1-866-861-2010.
