Man Arrested For Sparking Castro Valley Brush Fire

CASTRO VALLEY (CBS 5 / BCN) ― Investigators arrested a man accused of igniting a four-alarm brush fire that burned about 20 acres and consumed a building in Castro Valley on Monday afternoon.

The quick-moving blaze drove 50 people from their homes for about two hours until it could be 100 percent contained.

Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said the suspect was arrested by Cal Fire at the scene of the blaze, which was reported about 2 p.m. in the 7000 block of Crow Canyon Road.

The man was taken into custody just after 5 p.m. for negligently starting a fire by using a circular saw on the frame of a pickup truck in dry grass and was booked into the Santa Rita Jail, according to Knowles.

A total of 85 firefighters from the Alameda County Fire Department, Cal Fire, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and crews from cities throughout Alameda County responded to the fire.

Five aircraft were also used to douse the fire, which took until 4 p.m. to fully contain.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, but not other injuries were reported.
