A man upset after an apparent lovers' quarrel deliberately drove his car into a group of people standing in a Castro Valley driveway and then crashed into his boyfriend's house Monday night, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
The vehicle came to a stop in the living room of the home in the 2200 block of Regent Way, Sgt. Scott Dudek said.
Five victims, including the boyfriend, were taken to Eden Medical Center and St. Rose Hospital with various injuries the most serious being a 20-year-old woman who suffered a broken neck, according to the sheriff's office.
The woman remained hospitalized Tuesday in satisfactory but stable condition, while the other four victims struck were treated and released.
The woman had scooped up her 18-month-old son so that he wouldn't be run over and took the hit from the car, Dudek said.
"She saved her child from traumatic or even fatal injuries," he said, noting that the boy suffered only minor injuries.
A female passenger in the suspect's car also was hurt when the air bags deployed, Dudek said.
The car's driver, a 19-year-old Pittsburg man, wasn't injured and tried to flee but was arrested a short time later near Bay Area Rapid Transit tracks in Castro Valley, according to Dudek.
He was facing multiple felony assault charges and was being held without bail at Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
The suspect was expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Hayward Superior Court.
Dudek said the man's rampage followed an argument with his boyfriend over a cell phone and a diamond ring that he was demanding back.
The driver wanted the items back because their relationship had apparently soured, Dudek said.
Names of the suspect and the injured were not immediately released by authorities.
