Motorcyclist Killed In Fiery Campbell Crash
CAMPBELL (BCN) ―
A 52-year-old man was killed Thursday in a fiery crash that closed San Tomas Expressway in Campbell for nearly three hours, according to the
California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at about 7:25 p.m. near the intersection of the expressway and Budd Avenue, CHP Officer Robert Haven said.
The driver of a 1987 Harley Davidson was reportedly traveling above the posted 45 mph speed limit on the expressway as he approached a red light at the intersection with Budd Avenue. Applying the brakes, the motorcyclist lost control, overturned and slid into a 2002 Chevy Silverado that was making a left turn in the intersection.
The force of the crash caused the Chevy's fuel tank to rupture and both vehicles and the motorcyclist burst into flames, according to the CHP. The driver of the Chevy, San Jose resident Richard Mcalister, escaped with only minor injuries.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office this morning said that he has not been positively identified.
Portions of the expressway were closed until around 10:10 p.m.
