Police believe that a man killed in a Hercules car crash on Wednesday afternoon was street racing with another vehicle at the time.
The crash occurred around 2:20 p.m. at the intersection of Palm and Sycamore avenues near the on-ramp to eastbound state Highway 4.
Police said the driver of a red Chevrolet Camaro was racing a sedan when he crashed into a high-voltage power pole, knocking the pole almost onto the road.
The Contra Costa County coroner's office had not identified the driver of the Camaro, who was found dead in his car.
Investigators were looking for the sedan that took part in the street race possibly a newer model four-door Nissan Sentra.
Drivers were blocked from accessing Interstate 80 or Highway 4 from Sycamore Avenue until about 5 p.m. because wires were hanging down across the roadway after the crash, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Kroncke said.
The downed power pole temporarily caused 5,400 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers to lose power in the Hercules area, according to PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian.
