Caltrain Kills Elderly Man; 3rd Death In 2 Weeks
SAN MATEO (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ―
An elderly man was struck and killed by a Caltrain Thursday in the third fatality on the commuter tracks this month, officials said.
Alfred Milton Ajuria, 82, of Belmont was in a pedestrian crosswalk around 6:40 a.m. on the tracks near 25th Avenue in San Mateo when he was by a southbound train.
Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn the crossing arms were lowered, and the lights and bells were functioning normally at the time.
Trains were delayed by up to an hour after the collision. The trains were all back on schedule by 11 a.m.
The San Mateo County coroner's office was investigating whether the man's death was a suicide, Dunn said.
Thursday's incident was the third time in 10 days that a person has been fatally struck by a Caltrain.
A 17-year-old Palo Alto boy was killed when he walked around a crossing gate on May 4 at the East Meadow Drive crossing in Palo Alto.
The previous day, a 29-year-old Palo Alto woman committed suicide by sitting on the tracks near the San Antonio station in Mountain View.
