Caltrain Hits Car On Tracks In SJ; Driver Survives
SAN JOSE (BCN) ―
A woman is in critical condition Thursday after she collided with a train while driving across the tracks in San Jose, according to the traffic division of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
A detective from the traffic division said the woman, who is in her 30s, was crossing the tracks in a Toyota Camry just south of the Caltrain Blossom Hill station at a private passage around 6:50 a.m.
Detective Victor Lopez said there is a stop sign and crosswalk in the area but no lights or bells.
Train No. 217 was heading north from Gilroy and traveling at a typical speed of 65 or 70 mph when they crashed, Lopez said.
"We just want people to be aware that when crossing the railroad tracks to make sure they obey all traffic signs and just be careful around railroads," Lopez said.
The woman, who was alone in the car and heading home after dropping her father off at work, was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose with major head injuries, Lopez said.
Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said three consecutive trains traveling north from Gilroy were subsequently canceled, including the train involved in the collision.
No one on the train was injured by the impact.
