Calif. Rice Growing Under Scrutiny In Drought
MARYSVILLE (CBS 5) ―
It seems like we are being urged to conserve water every day. But why is the majority of the state's water being used on crops being shipped to other countries?
There are over 500,000 acres of rice fields in California, with some people saying that's just too much water. Most of the crop will head not to America, but overseas to satisfy Asia's mighty appetite. But environmentalists and even some in the legislature think California needs to take a hard look at what crops are grown, and how much water is used to grow them.
