CHP Officer Flips Car During Hwy. 4 Chase In CoCo

MARTINEZ (CBS 5 / BCN) ― A California Highway Patrol officer was seriously injured Wednesday evening after his patrol car overturned during a pursuit along state Highway 4 near Martinez, according to authorities.

The CHP vehicle ran off the westbound side of the highway near the Franklin Canyon Golf Course around 7:45 p.m., going 30 feet up an embankment before rolling over several times, CHP Sgt. Trent Cross said.

The officer suffered severe head injuries in the mangled car and was airlifted to John Muir Hospital.

While the injuries were major, the officer was listed "in fair condition'' and was expected to survive, Cross said.

The identity of the officer was not immediately released.

Cross said he did not have details about what motivated the pursuit but added that police were able to detain the person they were chasing.
