SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has the highest unfavorability rating among California voters and is viewed as the most unqualifed to be governor among the potential candidates in both major political parties, according to a CBS 5 poll released Wednesday.

The results of the poll, conducted for CBS 5 by SurveyUSA, suggest that Newsom faces a significant uphill battle in any quest for the governor's office.

Newsom was viewed unfavorably by a third of the state's registered voters surveyed, compared with just under a quarter of them who had a favorable opinion of him.

When asked to rate how qualified he was to be governor, the San Francisco mayor was viewed as completely unqualified by 27 percent of voters. Only six percent believed he has the highest possible qualifications.

Among all the potential candidates tested in the CBS 5 poll, state Attorney General Jerry Brown generated the highest favorability rating at 31 percent and was the highest viewed, at 10 percent, as the top in terms of qualifications.

That finding was not considered surprising, given that Brown has previously served as governor and is well known throughout the state.

However, the poll found Brown also had an unfavorable rating of 34 percent and was viewed as completely unqualified by 20 percent of those voters surveyed — both numbers were higher than his favorability and totally qualified percentages.

With significantly smaller percentages of those who view him neutrally or have formed no opinion, compared with the other candidates — Brown could face a challenge closing the gap between the those who view him negatively versus positvely, the data suggests.

The CBS 5 poll of 502 registered California voters was conducted statewide on March 3 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent.
