Caldecott Tunnel Project To Create 1000s Of Jobs
OAKLAND (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
Work on a fourth bore at the Caldecott Tunnel could begin as soon as late January. The new bore will be built north of the current three tunnels.
The $420 million project would ease traffic congestion in non-commute hours and on weekends. Caltrans says groundbreaking could occur in late January.
Caltrans spokesman Jeff Weiss said 6,000 jobs will be created by the project.
"These are great jobs. These are skilled construction jobs," Weiss said. "They're high-paying jobs, so it will put a lot of people back to work. The construction industry has really been hard hit."
The new jobs will be goth onsite and offsite. Funding for the project comes from a combination of federal stimulus money and a half-cent sales tax approved by Contra Costa County voters.
Completion is expected by mid-2013.
