Major Injuries In Head-On Big Rig Crash Near Byron

BYRON (BCN) ― A 17-year-old boy driving with his twin brother and mother suffered major injuries after colliding head-on with a big rig on Byron Highway in unincorporated Contra Costa County this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The boy, Antioch resident Antonio Estrada, was driving a Pontiac Grand Am north on Byron Highway when for unknown reasons at about 7:10 a.m.  he crossed over the two-lane, undivided roadway into the path of a big rig, CHP Officer Scott Yox said.

The driver of the big rig, 44-year-old Jose Antonio Betancourt, suffered major facial injuries and a possible broken back, Yox said.

Betancourt was transported via helicopter to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, Yox said.

Antonio Estrada suffered major head and chest trauma and was also taken by helicopter to Eden Medical Center.

Estrada's twin brother, Sergio Estrada, was in the back seat and was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with a complaint of chest pain, Yox said.

The boys' mother, 39-year-old Maria Enciso, also was transported to John Muir Medical Center for leg abrasions and chest pain, according to Yox.

Both lanes of Byron Highway remained blocked as of 8:45 a.m. and the CHP was providing one-way traffic control around the crash, Yox said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Yox said the speed limit in the area is 55 mph, but that it is unknown whether Antonio Estrada was speeding.

There were no other vehicles in the area at the time of the crash, indicating that Antonio Estrada was not trying to pass another car when he traveled into the opposite lane, Yox said.
