All roads into the Butte County community of Paradise were closed Friday morning as firefighters battle a wildfire being fed by strong winds.
Fire officials say the fire has destroyed as many as 40 structures, while consuming more than 20,000 acres.
Officials are still trying to get an exact number of buildings destroyed, while trying to determine how many are homes.
The fire was threatening an additional 4,600 structures, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
More than 1,300 firefighters were trying to contain the blaze, which was only 15 percent contained by Friday morning.
Several thousand residents have been ordered from their homes. An evacuation shelter has been set up in nearby Chico.
Paradise is a town of about 30,000 residents some 90 miles north of Sacramento.
Fed by strong, erratic winds, the fire spread to the hills of the Butte College campus, where officials had set up an incident command center, said Cal Fire spokesman Joshpae White.
"The fire is jumping around quite a bit," White said. "It's flaring up in a lot of different areas."
