Officers investigating a burglary in Santa Rosa shot and killed a dog Thursday when it allegedly attacked them during the questioning and eventual arrest of one of the suspects.
Officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress in the 1800 block of Palisades Drive around 2:30 a.m., according to the Santa Rosa Police Department. A resident had awakened to find two men burglarizing the home, and police were told the suspects had escaped before they arrived.
Detectives from the property crimes investigations team reported finding evidence leading them to locate and arrest a 16-year-old boy at his home in the 1500 block of King Street at around 3:30 p.m. He was booked at juvenile hall for residential burglary and possession of stolen property.
A second burglary suspect, 21-year-old Darius Clark, was later contacted for questioning at his home in the 1500 block of Orchard Street. During a police interview, Clark allegedly let out his pit bull-type dog that threatened to attack detectives. The dog was shot once by police, though it was unclear if the animal was injured.
Animal control officers responded to the property and attempted to capture the increasingly aggressive dog, which apparently resisted an attempt to immobilize it with a Taser, according to police. The dog, which had a history of attacking people and other animals, was shot again by police and killed.
The continuing investigation at Clark's home yielded evidence connecting him to the earlier burglary as well as others, according to police, and he was arrested for residential burglary, possession of stolen property and probation violations.
