A San Francisco police bomb squad shut down Geary Blvd. for three hours Friday afternoon as it investigated a suspicious package received at a Catholic elementary school in the city's Richmond District.
A package sent to Star of the Sea Elementary School at 360 9th Ave. and Geary was reported to police as suspicious when it was received by the school about 1:15 p.m., SFPD Sgt. Wilfred Williams said.
Police blocked Geary between 7th and 9th avenues while a bomb squad robot examined the package, Williams said.
About 4:30 p.m., the package with a "suspicious battery substance and other chemicals" inside was deemed safe but police were still investigating where it came from and what the intent was, Williams said.
Students were not evacuated but limited to a certain area of the campus, away from the package, until they were let out of class, Williams said.
San Francisco Muni said the heavily-traveled 38 Geary bus line was also temporarily rerouted because of the "hazardous material" incident.
The bomb squad cleared the area and reopened Geary Blvd. as of 4:52 p.m.
