Berkeley police are trying to unravel a mystery that centers on an Ashby Avenue apartment building where one person committed suicide this week, and another body was found during a subsequent investigation.
Monday night police responded to a report of an argument at the complex on Ashby near Shattuck. They found 50-year-old Hassan bin Ali with a gun. He then shot himself in front of officers. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Wednesday night, investigators returned to the apartment building with a search warrant and found the decomposing remains of a second body.
"I can't get into the specifics of it, other than to say that the body had been hidden, or secreted away there on the first floor of the building," said Berkeley Police spokesman Andrew Frankel.
That death is being treated as suspicious. Right now its not clear how, or if, its connected to Ali's suicide, but investigators hope the coroner's report will be able to tell them more when the time of death is determined.
Police were still at the scene conducting the investigation Thursday.
