Student groups at the University of California at Berkeley held a rally on campus Wednesday to raise awareness about a sexual predator who has been targeting women wearing skirts in Berkeley.
Participants were encouraged to wear skirts in solidarity with the victims, and organizers called the event the "Skirt Rally."
Organizer Christie Santos said the gathering, which began about 12:30 p.m. at Upper Sproul Plaza, was an attempt to "break the silence" about the predator, who Berkeley police said has attacked at least 19 women near the campus since September.
In every case, the suspect has walked up behind college-age women wearing skirts, reached up under their clothing and attempted to digitally penetrate them, according to police.
Santos said more than 300 Facebook users pledged to take part in the rally. Both men and women were encouraged to wear skirts.
The event was organized the local branches of the women's groups V-Day and National Organization for Women.
Witnesses to any of the assaults should call the Berkeley Police Department's sex crimes detail at (510) 981-5735.
Police are also encouraging victims to report attacks immediately to Berkeley police dispatch at (510) 981-5900, or from a cell phone at (510) 981-5911.
People who want to remain anonymous can call Bay Area Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
