Bay To Breakers Race Winners Announced

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) ― The leading man and woman winners of this year's Bay to Breakers 12-kilometer footrace across San Francisco were both Kenyan.

Kenya's John Korir, 32, was the first to cross the finish line during Sunday's 97th Annual Bay to Breakers.

Korir, who also was the first man to finish in last year's Bay to Breakers competition as well, arrived at Ocean Beach with a race time of 34 minutes 24 seconds.

Four seconds later, Ridouane Harroufi, a 26-year-old man from Morocco, finished the race with a time of 34 minutes 28 seconds.

John Yuda, a 28-year-old from Tanzania, came in third among the men with a time of 35 minutes three seconds.

Lineth Chepkurui, a 20-year-old from Kenya, was the first female contestant to cross the finish line and had a time of 39 minutes 22 seconds.

The next three female contestants to finish the race were Rose Kosgei, 26, Jane Kibii, 23, and Caroline Rotich, 24, all from Kenya.

Steve Sundell, a 26-year-old Redwood City man, was the first American man and Bay Area resident to complete the race, finishing seventh among the men with a time of 36 minutes 21 seconds.

He was followed by Peter Gilmore, a 31-year-old San Mateo man, who completed the race in 36 minutes 44 seconds.

Kathleen Trotter, a 23-year-old Palo Alto resident, was the first American woman to cross the finish line, coming in fifth among the women and finishing the race in 42 minutes 13 seconds.

Six seconds later, her twin sister Amanda Trotter crossed the finish line, coming in sixth among the women.

Clara Peterson, a 24-year-old Stinson Beach resident, was the 10th female contestant to cross the finish line.

Bay to Breakers organizers estimated that 60,000 people, many in costumes, attended Sunday's event, which traveled through the city, beginning at the Embarcadero and ending at Ocean Beach.

There were about 33,000 registered runners, according to the organizers.

The San Francisco police and fire departments reported no major incidents in connection with the race.

City officials had asked participants to clean up after themselves this year as immense amounts of trash always get left behind during the event. Last year, that amounted to 250,000 bottles and cans, according to officials.
