Feds Urge Rejection Of Plea In SF Oil Spill Case
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ―
Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to reject a plea offer by the owner of a container ship that spilled oil into San Francisco Bay last year for charges of falsifying documents and negligence.
Fleet Management Ltd. of Hong Kong made the offer last week to plead no contest to six felony charges and two misdemeanors. The company, however, maintains the Nov. 7 crash was largely the fault of others.
In a filing on Tuesday, prosecutors urged a judge not to accept the offer. They say managers tried to cover up the company's role in a crash that spilled 54,000 gallons of oil into the water.
A no-contest pleaunlike a guilty plea or a conviction after trialcould not be used against Fleet Management in any of the lawsuits pending against the company over the spill.
