Water Districts Fined For Bay Sewage Spills
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ―
State water quality officials want three Bay Area water treatment districts to pay $1.7 million for letting untreated sewage spill into San Francisco Bay and nearby tributaries.
The San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board has filed complaints against San Mateo, Hillsborough and the Crystal Springs Sewer District for allowing millions of gallons of sewage to spew into the bay.
Officials say the three sanitation districts have leaked more than 6 million gallons of untreated sewage into waterways over the last four years.
Many of the leaks were caused by broken and damaged pipes and inadequate capacity to treat storm water runoff.
The three districts can either pay the fines or contest the penalty to the Regional Water Board.
