Bay Point Fire Death A Possible Homicide
BAY POINT (BCN) ―
The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 66-year-old Bay Point man who was pulled from a burning apartment building Wednesday night as a possible homicide, Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Thursday.
The coroner's office was still working to find the man's family this afternoon and wasn't releasing his name or autopsy results.
Lee, however, did say the autopsy results indicated the death might have been a homicide.
Sheriff's investigators, along with fire investigators from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, were at the apartment complex this afternoon collecting evidence and working to determine a cause of the fire, Lee said.
The blaze was reported at about 9:55 p.m. at a three-story apartment complex at 542 Bustos Place, according to Battalion Chief Dave George.
The man was rescued from an apartment but died of his injuries, George said.
A cat also died in the blaze, which heavily damaged one apartment and caused smoke damage to a second one, according to George.
33 firefighters responded to the call and had the blaze under control by about 10:40 p.m., according to George.
No other injuries were reported.
"It was a very intense fire," George said. "These are well-built units so it was very hot and very smoky."
The apartment complex sustained about $250,000 in damage.
