Bay Meadows Betting Machines Under Scrutiny

SAN MATEO (CBS 5) ― California State Senator Leland Yee has called for an investigation into a horse betting scandal involving Bay Meadows racetrack. According to Yee, thousands of Californians may have been ripped off by betting machines that excluded the winning horse.

The machines give betters a couple of options. One can pencil in picks or have the computer make selections.

A major glitch involving quick picks was exposed on the day of the Kentucky Derby. An unidentified bettor used a betting machine to decide the first four horses in the exact order of finish. Out of his 1,300 picks, the computer never once picked Big Brown, who won the Derby.

"The chances of Big Brown not being in that selection is absolutely outrageous," Sen. Yee said.

Yee is asking the state auditor to determine if there was any purposeful fraud or just a software problem on the company that makes the machines, Scientific Games.

Meanwhile, not all bets are on. The California Horse Racing Board has suspended all quick picks pending their investigation.
