Anthony Sanchez Jr. of South San Francisco has been identified as the 41-year-old driver who died after being trapped in his Isuzu box van for nearly an hour after a crash on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Tuesday, according to the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office.
Sanchez was driving at an unknown speed on the bridge when his vehicle rear-ended a 2-axle Freightliner truck at approximately 1:15 p.m., a CHP official said.
The big-rig had stopped in the No. 5 lane of the bridge, possibly because it ran out of fuel, CHP officials said. The 23-year-old Union City driver of the big-rig was not injured.
Tuesday's crash blocked three lanes on the bridge for several hours, causing major traffic delays. A pregnant woman, who was stuck in traffic near the toll plaza had to pull over to give birth.
