A fatal accident closed most of the westbound upper deck of the Bay Bridge for nearly three hours on Tuesday afternoon and traffic remained slow on Interstate 80 and other East Bay freeways even after the lanes finally reopened.
A truck crashed into the back of a stalled big rig carrying a large crane about 1:15 p.m. The collision occured along the section of the bridge just before the tunnel at Treasure Island, said Officer Shawn Chase of the California Highway Patrol.
The truck, from a business called "Diet to Go," drove directly into the back of the big rig, Chase explained.
"Unfortunately the gentleman who was driving the box truck didn't survive," Chase said. He added that the big rig driver was not injured.
Traffic that backed up following the collision left cars stalled along the bridge and into the East Bay, Chase said.
Three lanes of the bridge's upper deck were closed until about 4 p.m., causing the backups to last well into the evening commute.
A pregnant woman stuck in traffic near the toll plaza went into labor during the stall, Chase added. The woman pulled over into the administration parking lot to give birth. Her condition was not immediately know, he said.
