Drunk Driving Blamed For Deadly Bay Bridge Crash

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― A 31-year-old Oakland man was arrested Saturday morning after he allegedly made an unsafe lane change on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge that resulted in a fatal collision, the California Highway Patrol said.

About 5 a.m., Daniel Francisco Olivera was driving a 1998 Saab on Interstate Highway 80 in the No. 4 lane at a high rate of speed when he made an unsafe lane change into the No. 3 lane, CHP Officer Licastro said.

Due to speeding while being intoxicated, Olivera collided into the rear of a 2004 Harley-Davidson, driven by 30-year-old Ryan Willis Jones, of San Francisco, Licastro said.

Jones was transported to San Francisco General Hospital by the San Francisco Fire Department, where he died about 5:50 a.m.

Olivera sustained major injuries and was booked into San Francisco County Jail.

Two lanes of I-80 just west of Treasure Island were closed as the incident was investigated. The lanes reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to the CHP.
