High-Speed Chase On Closed Bay Bridge

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch
OAKLAND (CBS 5 / BCN) ― A carjacking suspect was arrested Friday night after he led police on a high-speed chase from San Francisco to Oakland, through the closed Bay Bridge.

CHP Officer Shawn Chase said a Dodge Nitro, which had reportedly been carjacked, was spotted around 10:20 p.m. entering eastbound Interstate 80 from Sterling Street in San Francisco.

"We tried to stop the vehicle and it continued eastbound through the barricade," Chase said.

Police say he drove on the lower deck of the bridge at speeds near 115 miles per hour.

CHP officers pursued the suspect across the bridge, but stopped the chase due to safety concerns.

The vehicle was then located abandoned around 10:35 p.m. at 79th Avenue and International Boulevard and Oakland police detained the suspect in the area short time later, Chase said.

No one involved in repairing the Bay Bridge was injured during the chase, as much of the repair work is occurring on the upper deck. The bridge has been closed since Tuesday night after a 5,000 pound crossbar fell onto rush hour traffic.
