Flooding, Accidents Mar Bay Area Commute

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― The California Highway Patrol is advised drivers to use caution on Bay Area highways and roadways Monday morning, as rain and clogged storm drains have caused incidences of flooding in several locations.

Up to 10 inches of water was reported Monday morning in the two right lanes of northbound U.S. Highway 101 near Lafayette Street in Santa Clara, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

Flooding in the right lane of a transition ramp at the interchange between northbound state Highway 87 and northbound Interstate Highway 280 also caused a hazard to drivers Monday morning, according to the CHP.

A large amount of water created a hazard Sunday in the right lane of eastbound Interstate Highway 580 near Harrison Street in Piedmont, according to the CHP.

There were scattered accidents across the Bay Area early Monday morning. Among them, a major-injury accident blocked an offramp from northbound Interstate Highway 880 in Fremont, according to the CHP.

CHP officers responded to the crash involving a vehicle and a big-rig at about 1:30 a.m. near Stevenson Boulevard, CHP Officer Aaron Quistad said.

Officers shut down the eastbound offramp to Stevenson Boulevard from I-880 indefinitely while emergency personnel worked to remove a victim who was trapped in one of the vehicles, Quistad said.

In Santa Clara, a major-injury accident temporarily blocked all but one northbound lane of U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Clara, according to the CHP.

Officers responded to the two-vehicle collision just south of the Montague Expressway at about 3:30 a.m. that reportedly caused major injuries to one victim who was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, CHP Officer Aaron Quistad said.

It remains unclear whether the victim was injured from being ejected during the crash or struck by another vehicle after exiting on to the roadway immediately after, Quistad said.

For about an hour, only the far right lane was open to northbound traffic, Quistad said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 3:45 a.m. and canceled at 4:35 a.m.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
