A big winter storm that powered its way through the Bay Area was reduced to scattered showers on Tuesday evening, leaving behind a few mudslides and some scattered flooding.
The low-pressure system was moving northeastward, but the National Weather Service said a chance of rain remained through Tuesday night before the sun finally breaks through to stay on Wednesday.
In unincoporated Contra Costa County, a San Pablo neighborhood was overcome by flooding after street drains in the low-lying area became clogged.
Numerous traffic accidents were reported on wet roads throughout the Bay Area and police urged caution to drivers as long as rainy conditions persisted.
Roughly 2,600 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers remained without power around the Bay Area. Most of the outages were concentrated in the East Bay, the utility said.
In coastal Monterey County, mudslides closed Highway 1 for several hours during the day. The closure came shortly after a morning flash flood warning was issued for the Big Sur area and other parts of the county.
Wildfires from the Basin Complex last July burned through much of the forestland in the Big Sur area leaving the coastal mountains vulnerable to mudslides in heavy rain.
San Mateo County, which saw some of the heaviest rainfall totals from the storm, had trees toppled in numerous locations.
Emergency crews there cleared state Highway 92 from fallen trees that blocked all east and westbound lanes for several hours Tuesday morning near Skylawn Memorial Park Cemetery, the California Highway Patrol said.
In the Sierra, ski slope operators were happy as the storm left behind several feet of new snow in the mountains. A winer storm warning there expired as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The downpour over recent days had put more water into area reservoirs, but water officials said it still was not enough to end the drought.
