SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / BCN) ― The first cold snap of the season — bringing with it rain and possible snow showers — will move over the Bay Area this weekend and continue for much of next week, forecasters predicted.

Bay Area residents should expect cold or near-freezing temperatures across the region, with the possibility of freezing rain and snow on local mountains starting mid-weekend, National Weather Service forecaster Dan Gudgel said.

"We're looking for an inclement-weather weekend," explained Gudgel.

The weather service advised that snow levels could drop as low as 2,000 feet on Saturday and Sunday and possibly as low as 1,500 feet by Monday.

As a result, roads in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the North Bay hills could be affected by snowfall, forecasters warned.

In addition, snow levels in the Sierra were likely to drop to as low as 1,000 feet.

The storm front moving toward the Bay Area from the Gulf of Alaska was expected to cause temperatures throughout the region to drop as much as 15 to 20 degrees below normal for this time of year beginning on Friday night and lasting through the middle of next week, the weather service said.

Low temperatures in San Francisco were expected to drop to the mid-40s, and low temperatures inland were predicted to fall to the mid 30s during the cold snap, according to forecasters.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger directed the California Office of Emergency Services to work with state and local agencies to activate a "cold-freeze emergency plan," according to a statement from the governor's office.

The National Guard has opened three armories as winter shelters in the Bay Area — in Sunnyvale, Gilroy and Santa Cruz.

The Sunnyvale National Guard Armory is located at 620 E. Maude Ave.; the National Guard Armory in Gilroy is at 8490 Wren Ave.; and an armory in Santa Cruz is open at 301 Armory Road, DeLaveaga Park, National Guard Lt. Theresa Chrystal said.

Residents were advised to contact the American Red Cross, Bay Area Chapter at (415) 307-4400 for cold weather preparation or emergency services, Chrystal said.

The cold snap was expected to run through at least the middle of next week, an NWS advisory issued Friday indicated.
