BART Expansion Opponents Demand Recount In Lawsuit
SAN JOSE (AP) ―
Opponents of a measure that would increase the sales tax in Santa Clara County to help pay for a BART extension to Silicon Valley are suing for a partial recount of the vote.
Supporters of the measure, which needed a two-thirds majority to pass, celebrated last week after it obtained 66.78 percent of the vote and too few uncounted ballots remained to change the outcome.
The suit by the group Transportation Solutions Defense and Education FundĀ seeks to prevent the election results from being certified until ballots from 10 percent of the precincts in Santa Clara County are manually recounted.
The suit has been filed against the secretary of state and county registrar of voters. Attempts to reach both offices for comment were unsuccessful.
