BART Troubled By SF's Central Subway Plans

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― BART officials are worried that a major transportation project proposed by San Francisco MUNI could undermine the Powell Street station.

The billion dollar project will be called the central subway, and would go from AT&T Park, all the way to Chinatown, with most of it underground. The tunnel would go under the Powell Street Station, just six feet below the BART tracks.

This concerns BART Director Tom Radulovich, who says the new project could harm the integrity of the station.

"We just need to make sure that the construction of the central subway, which is going to be this vast, underground structure, doesn't in anyway compromise the BART station, or the Muni service," said Radulovich.

However, Muni spokesman Judson True says that any problems can be worked out.

"It's an engineering issue that we'll be solving in the design phase. We don't have any concerns that this is something unusual for a subway system," said True.

Construction on the project is not scheduled to begin for two years.
