CBS 5 has received a lot of feedback after revealing that the flagship Banana Republic store on Grant Avenue in San Francisco
hired 39 international employees to work for the holiday season. On Friday, the company responed to our story.
Banana Republic is owned by Gap Inc. In a follow-up email exchange with Louise Callagy, the Gap, Inc. spokesperson elaborated on the company's statement that they could not find enough local workers to fill the store:
"We started months ago looking for seasonal hires. In the Bay Area total, we've hired approximately 1,700 - 2,000 seasonal workers, of which about 98% are local (doing the math from 39)," the email read.
"We advertised multiple times on Craigslist and LinkedIn. We participated in job fairs including Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing and a South of Market Employment Center (Mission Hall) job fair. We also solicited through our existing employee base for referrals. We even have our corporate employees volunteering in stores today and throughout our busiest weekends," Callagy continued.
"We did receive hundreds of applications, and we also interviewed the vast majority of these. In many cases applicants had trouble with the working weekends and nights aspect (a big part of seasonal employment in retail), therefore we do need more people to apply and we have positions to fill," read the email.
CBS 5 asked if there have been any cutbacks or layoffs recently at the store.
Callagy responded, "Our approach is to maximize the number of hours our ongoing sales team can staff. We did not do any layoffs or cut backs this holiday season at our Grant Avenue store."
