CUPERTINO (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― Firefighters put out a blaze early Wednesday that burned for more than three hours at the headquarters of computer maker Apple Inc., causing $2 million in damage.

Investigators determined that the three-alarm fire was ignited accidently, Santa Clara County Fire Capt. Daron Pisciotta said.

The flames scorched the roof and the second level of the west wing of the "Apple 6" building — one of the six buildings on the company's campus at 20604 Valley Green Drive in Cupertino.

The blaze was extinguished early Wednesday morning and no one was injured.

Fire Department spokesman Rafael Salcedo said the fire was "not very big, but there is going to be a lot of smoke damage."

The two-story, 120,000-square-foot building was built about 40 years ago, Pisciotta said. It suffered significant smoke and water damage on the second floor, and the west wing is unusable for the foreseeable future, he added.

Some of the water damage came from two sprinklers inside the building that activated when the fire alarm sounded, Pisciotta explained. The building's east wing suffered minimal damage.

The first reports of smoke came in about 10 p.m. Tuesday night, and the fire was contained by 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Some stubborn flames under a large "heating ventilation air-conditioning unit" burned for about an hour more, Pisciotta said.

Investigators later determined that the blaze started under that air conditioning unit, which was being suspended on the roof.

Construction crews told officials that the fire ignited from a welding operation to install the unit.
