Antioch Toddler Falls 3 Stories Out Of Window

ANTIOCH (CBS 5) ― A 23-month-old boy appeared to have escaped without major injuries after falling from a third-story window at an apartment complex in Antioch Sunday, according to a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District captain.

The incident was reported at about 11:45 a.m. at the Lakeshore Apartments complex located at 600 Wilbur Ave., Fire Captain Charles Thomas said.

The boy apparently climbed up on a chair and then onto a table directly under a window. He then pressed against a window screen that gave way, causing the boy to fall about 25 feet into a bed of rocks, according to Antioch police Lt. Scott Willerford.

When emergency crews arrived on scene, the boy was "conscious and crying," Thomas said.

The boy was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Oakland to be treated for his injuries.

The boy suffered a bruised lung, an abrasion on his abdominal area and a bruise on his head, but appeared to have suffered no major injuries from the fall. He was being held for observation at the hospital Sunday evening, Willerford said.

"It's amazing," he said. "The boy's doing fine, so it's a good outcome under the circumstances."

The incident was under investigation but appeared to have been an accident, and there was no sign of neglect, Willerford said.

He said there was no safety lock on the window, and that police recommend that people in multi-story buildings get the locks on all windows.
