3 Jailed In Botched Antioch Robbery Turned Murder
ANTIOCH (BCN) ―
Police arrested two teenagers and one adult Monday in connection with the weekend murder of an 18-year-old Antioch man during what appears to have been a robbery gone wrong, police said Tuesday.
Matthew Butler was found shot multiple times inside his car at about 10:20 p.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Lone Tree Way near Williamson Ranch Park, Antioch police said.
He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Butler was known to sell marijuana, police said, and investigators believed that two of the suspects, a 17-year-old Antioch boy and 20-year-old Charles Hughes, a resident of Antioch and Oakland, had been planning to rob him.
When Butler fought back, the 17-year-old allegedly shot him several times, police said.
Police served search warrants at two locations in Antioch on Monday and recovered the gun they believe was used to shoot Butler as well as other evidence, police said.
They also arrested a third suspect, a 16-year-old boy, who allegedly attempted to hide or get rid of the gun. He is being held at juvenile hall on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact, police said.
The alleged shooter is also being held at juvenile hall and Hughes is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility, police said.
Investigators planned to present the case to the district attorney's office within the next few days.
