Two-Alarm Antioch Grass Fire Scorches 5 Acres
ANTIOCH (BCN) ―
A grass fire in Antioch fueled by heat and wind consumed 5 acres and several trees on Wednesday, according to a Contra Costa County fire spokesman.
The two-alarm fire was first reported at Hillcrest Avenue and Country Hills Drive around 4:30 p.m., said Battalion Chief Dave George.
According to George, 36 firefighters worked to get the blaze 90 percent contained within an hour. Firefighters were expecting to stay on scene into the evening in order to make sure the flames were completely out.
"Having to deal with a fast moving fire on a hot day but with gusty winds, as the night goes by we're going to keep our eyes especially out for sparks that might cause this thing to flair up," George said.
Although investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, George said it is possible grinding sparks from a nearby construction site started the blaze.
He said that 100-degree temperatures and 14-mile-an-hour winds made the fire a challenge to control.
