A suspected drunken driver is being blamed for a solo-vehicle crash in Antioch early Thursday morning that seriously injured three people, including an 8-month-old baby and a 3-year-old child, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash occurred at 1:23 a.m. on westbound state Highway 4 west of Somersville Road.
Nicole Berry, a 23-year-old Pittsburg resident, was driving with five passengers in a 2004 Mitsubishi when, possibly because of her level of intoxication, she swerved to the right and went off the road, the CHP said.
She then yanked the steering wheel to the left to get back on the road, which caused the vehicle to roll several times, CHP Officer Tom Maguire said.
The two children, brothers from Pittsburg, were not properly restrained and both were ejected from the vehicle. They suffered major head trauma and were transported to Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland.
Berry, who was also not properly restrained, suffered major head injuries as well and a broken wrist. She was taken by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
The children's mother, 25-year-old Pittsburg resident Shawna George, along with two other passengers, Jessica Wagner, 18, of Pittsburg, and Roger Rivera, 25, of Concord, suffered minor injuries.
Berry was arrested for drunken driving causing injury before being released to the hospital for treatment, according to the CHP. Investigators allegedly found physical evidence, noted symptoms and took statements that suggested Berry was intoxicated at the time of the crash, the CHP reported.
Westbound Highway 4 was closed for about an hour while officials investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage.
