Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's office is speaking out about insults he faced at a San Francisco fundraiser and the lawmaker who shouted the insults is not apologizing.
It was anything but a warm welcome for Schwarzenegger at a Democratic fundraiser in San Francisco on Wednesday. As former Assembly Speaker Willie Brown invited him to say a few words, a cell phone camera captured the booing and controversial comments of Assemblyman Tom Ammiano. Schwarzenegger stopped speaking, apparently stunned by what he was hearing.
"Tom Ammiano led a couple people in conduct unbecoming," Brown said. "Matter of fact, it can't be put on family television."
"He wasn't surprised by that," said Aaron McLear, Schwarzenegger's press secretary. "He just wanted to go and say 'Hello.'"
McLear said Schwarzenegger dropped by the event to see his good friend Brown. He knew would not be a popular guest, so he was not offended.
"As he put it, it was nothing compared to the reception he got at Hyannis Port from the Kennedys when he asked Maria to marry him," said McLear.
McLear also said Schwarzenegger isn't expecting an apology and he won't be getting one any time soon. Ammiano is refusing to say sorry, and has said he stands by his statements.
"We're not the Stepford party," Ammiano said. "You know people have strong reactions and human reactions; and that's what we did."
