Woman Hit, Killed By ACE Train In Fremont

FREMONT (CBS 5 / BCN) ― A 40-year-old woman was struck and killed by an Altamont Commuter Express train Tuesday after police observed her throwing items from her home, according to the Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to her residence at the Maple Square Apartments around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and found the woman throwing things from the balcony. Police say she then walked toward the nearby railroad tracks near Maple Boulevard just outside the ACE station.

A freight train started to move while officers shouted for the woman to get off the tracks and she then walked over to another set of tracks and stood between the rails, police said.

The No. 6 ACE train began to approach the woman and sounded its whistle but officers were not able to reach here and she was fatally struck by the train, according to police.

It is not clear if the woman was intending to be hit by the train or if the freight train prevented her from being aware of the ACE train.

The Fremont Police Traffic Unit and the Union Pacific Railroad Police are investigating the death of the woman, whose identity is not being released pending notification of the next of kin.
