At Least 30 Abandoned Boats Floating In Delta

Owning a boat is a luxury that can become quite expensive when the economy goes "south."

The Contra Costa Sheriff's Marine Patrol said almost 30 decaying barges, tugboats and fishing boats are floating aimlessly in the Delta.

However, the problem is a little different for Martinez harbor master Craig Paulson.

He said some boat owners just decide to walk away from their vessels that are kept in a slip.

"We've got some, and we're dealing with them. The Department of Boat and Waterways has grants, which we're applying, which helps marinas to get rid of their boats," he said.

Paulson said that in the last two-and-a-half years, he's had to crush eleven abandoned boats, which can cost $12,000 or more to remove.

The state of California spends about a $1.5 million a year removing deserted recreational boats.

Following Florida, California ranks as the second largest-boating state.
