Car Set Afire Outside UC President's Oakland Home

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

OAKLAND (CBS 5/KCBS/BCN) ― Arson investigators were in the Oakland hills pouring over the burned out shell of a car set ablaze early Thursday morning outside the home of UC President Mark Yudof.

Multiple bomb squads were first called in when it was feared there was an explosive inside the car. The fire department was called just before 1:50 a.m. near 16 Woodmont Way, Oakland police spokesman Officer Jeff Thomason said. The Oakland police and the Alameda County Sheriff's Department sent their bomb squads.

Sheriff spokesman JD Nelson said fortunately, no bomb was found.

"Well, it's suspicious because it's right across the little courtyard from where the UC President lives," Nelson said. "It happened at 1:50 in the morning. The weather up here is quite cold, so to have a car just catch on fire is very suspicious. And by all appearances, it looks like it was a deliberate act."

J.D. Nelson said it appears some sort of accelerant was used in the fire, and that the Oakland Police Department's arson unit is investigating the incident.

However, Thomason said investigators are not yet calling the fire arson because they haven't ruled out the possibility that an electrical problem caused the fire.

Nelson said it looks like the car may have been some kind of Volkswagon and its not clear if it belongs to Yudof.

Yudof, whose home has been the scene of protests in the past, has come under intense criticism in recent weeks because of controversial cuts in the UC budget, increased student fees and worker furloughs.
